The secret World of German Fraternities
In Germany there are more than 1.000 different fraternities with about 22.000 active members and 135.000 “Old Boys” (the graduated former members and present financiers of each fraternity). They give young male students the possibility to live for a very small amount of money in nice villas. But all members have duties even though every fraternity is different. Beside fencing duels, a strong traditionalism, special drinking bouts and rituals, all fraternities have one thing in common: to make a lifelong commitment, to establish professional contacts and to become a huge conservative community. Once you are in, you’ll never get out again.
